Happy International Women's Day!
Today, we celebrate incredible achievements of women worldwide and the amazing potential of future generations of women to come. As we reflect on our progress over the past several decades, I would like to share my perspective as a female leader who started her career three decades ago and learned some valuable leadership lessons along the way.
When I first started out in my career, I was often quietly excited about being the only female in the room and didn't even think about it. I was happy to be part of a team and eager to learn everything I could from my colleagues. Over the years, I've come to realize just how significant it is to be a woman in leadership and the unique challenges and opportunities that come with that role.
One of the most important lessons I've learned is the importance of authenticity. As women in leadership, we often feel like we must act a certain way to fit in with predominantly male leadership styles around us. But the truth is, our unique perspectives and experiences make us valuable as leaders. When we embrace our authentic selves and lead from a place of integrity and transparency, we inspire others to do the same.
Another key lesson I've learned is the power of mentorship. Throughout my career, I've been fortunate enough to have several strong female and male leaders to look up to and learn from. Male mentors I’ve worked with have provided necessary allyship and support for female representation, creating a more inclusive and equitable workplace culture, while female mentors of mine have provided invaluable guidance and support. These individuals demonstrated what it meant to serve as accountable role models. As we continue to break down barriers and pave the way for future generations of women, it's important that we also pay it forward and serve as mentors and advocates for those who come after us.
I truly believe that one of the most powerful aspects of leadership is the ability to influence and inspire others to reach their full potential. As leaders, we have the privilege and responsibility to guide others along their own unique journeys and help them discover the amazing things they can achieve. It's not just about delegating tasks, titles, org structures, or telling people what to do; it's about truly connecting with others and empowering them to be their best selves.
When we invest in others and show them that we believe in their abilities, we can create a ripple effect of positivity and growth. By holding their hand and providing guidance and support, we can help them step outside their comfort zones and take on new challenges with confidence and enthusiasm. And when we see those "ah-ha" moments and pure joy that come with realizing one's true capabilities, it is truly a fulfilling experience.
Moreover, the impact of our leadership extends far beyond just the individuals we directly mentor or guide. When we inspire and empower others, they, in turn, can become role models and mentors for others in their own spheres of influence. It's a powerful cycle of growth and positive change that can ripple effect throughout workplaces, homes, and even communities.
On this International Women's Day, I encourage all of us to reflect on our leadership journeys and the lessons we've learned. To all the amazing women out there who are navigating their unique challenges, I want to remind you that you’ve got this. Keep pushing forward, and never forget the value that you bring to the table. And to all the men who stand by our side and uplift us, we see and appreciate you. It takes courage to make a real change; we're lucky to have allies like you. Let's continue to work together to create a world where everyone can thrive and where everyone has the opportunity to reach their full potential.
